This year we are very proud to be celebrating our 165th year as an independent, family run, Wellington based business.
With Timmy and Kitty Tredwin now working alongside Nick and Louise, we are proud call ourselves a fifth generation business and can continue to serve our community with the same care, reliability and respect we always have done.
H. Tredwin & Son’s first recorded funeral service dates back to 1860, when Harold Tredwin was establishing the family funeral business within the local community of Sampford Arundel.
During the 19th century, the Tredwin family was best known for its building work, contributing to projects such as the expansion of Wellington, extensions to Holy Cross Church in Sampford Arundel, and a wide range of carpentry and bricklaying work throughout the local area.
While the combination of building and funeral directing may seem unusual today, it was not uncommon for families to undertake both professions. Each trade required practical skills, physical strength, expertise in woodworking, and access to a workshop. The craftsmanship used in construction naturally lent itself to the making of coffins and the provision of funeral services, allowing the Tredwin family to serve their community in more ways than one.

From the 19th century through to the early 21st century, building work remained at the heart of the business. The family's contribution to the development of the local area was recognised with the naming of Tredwin Close, a street on the Longforth Farm housing development in Wellington.
As each generation took over the business, they brought fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose, while remaining true to the values that had guided the family for generations. Although the core trades of building and funeral services remained intertwined, the balance between them evolved over time to reflect changing needs and opportunities.
In 2006, following the passing of Francis Tredwin, the third generation of the family business, Nick and Louise Tredwin took over its stewardship. After continuing Francis’s work for several years, they made the decision to place greater emphasis on funeral directing. This marked a significant new chapter in the company’s history. The business relocated to Wellington, where Nick and Louise purchased the North Street premises that remain the home of H. Tredwin & Son today.
To celebrate our birthday this year we have bought ourselves a new fleet of cars.
Not only for our own enjoyment but to make sure we are delivering the very best possible service to our customers and the community that have supported us for the past 165 years.
