Our Story
H Tredwin & Son was founded in 1860 by Harold Tredwin and has continued to help the bereaved and provide a caring, dignified and professional service for over 150 years.
Originally builders and funeral directors - the company still offers handmade coffins reflecting the practical skills passed down through the generations.

We are known for our calm, relaxed, yet professional approach to funeral directing. You won’t find us in top hats and three-piece suits except on the day of the funeral itself. Instead, we focus on being a steady, reassuring presence during a time of uncertainty and grief — offering comfort, compassion, and support when it’s needed most.
H Tredwin & Son began as the village undertakers, caring for friends and family, so there was never any need to be anything other than ourselves — and that has never changed. We are the same people in our work as we are in our everyday lives. Our compassion, empathy, and care are genuine, and we are proud to bring that authenticity to the families we serve.

It has always been important to us to invest back into our business, ensuring the service we provide is of the highest possible quality.
For Nick Tredwin in particular, maintaining exceptional funeral vehicles has always been a priority. Inspired in part by the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, we invested in a Jaguar XJ hearse and limousine in the early 2000s, offering families and those in our care the finest final journey.
Staying true to this commitment, we have now invested once again, this time in the newest Jaguar hearse and limousine models, to bring our service proudly and fully up to date for 2025.
Our Handmade Solid Oak Coffins
Making coffins, the way our ancestors did
Alongside the funeral directing business, the Tredwin family has also passed down the knowledge and craftsmanship required to build a solid oak coffin from scratch. Each generation has taught the next — fathers passing their skills to their sons, who in turn pass them on again — preserving a tradition that has shaped our family for decades.
In a world where such skills are now almost non-existent, we are incredibly proud to say that we are one of the very few funeral directors in the UK who still handcraft their own solid oak coffins in-house.
